My father and I have certain phraseology we utilize when discussing the Mets, but alas, he was at a concert and unaware of the goings on at Shea Stadium as they unfolded on Wednesday night.
Yet, I had a feeling that something funky was going to go down, when in the midst of a conversation with colleague, probably around the 7th or 8th inning that person uttered the three magic words, which usually come to my e-mail in-box after a Mets walk-off win.
Write it up.
And now I shall...albeit a few hours later than I'd like.
* Mets walk-off win #352 (postseason included) was the 4th this season for the Mets, and their first since April 29 against the Pirates.
* It was the first career walk-off hit for Fernando Tatis, whom some may recall I criticized for his lack of walk-offedness not too long ago
* It was the first Mets walk-off win against the Marlins since David Wright beat them with a sacrifice fly on April 9, 2006, and their 13th walk-off win against the Marlins overall.
* It was the 172nd extra-inning walk-off win in Mets history and the 27th walk-off win in a game lasting 12 innings. The Mets have 2 walk-off wins that came in the 12th inning this season. They had 2 last season as well, one of which was decided on a bunt by Endy Chavez.
* Endy Chavez hit both his first career pinch-hit HR, and his first HR to come on an 0-2 pitch, to tie the game in the 9th inning.
* It is the 40th Mets walk-off win in which the winning play came with the Mets trailing, the first since Carlos Delgado's 2-run single beat the Cubs on May 17, 2007. That's the first "walk-off when trailing" double to win since Lee Mazzilli had one against the Pirates in a 5-4 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader on June 7, 1987.
* Fernando Tatis is the 2nd Fernando with a walk-off hit for the Mets, joining Fernando Vina, who had a 15th-inning single to beat the Padres on April 27, 1994.
* Justin Miller is the 2nd Miller to give up a walk-off hit against the Mets. The other was Bob L. Miller, who allowed a 3-run double to John Stephenson in a 4-3 Mets walk-off win on August 24, 1965.
* The Mets had 16 strikeouts in this game. The Mets record for strikeouts in a walk-off win is 17. The Mets struck out 17 Pirates (Kenny Rogers leading the way with 10) in a 3-2 walk-off win on October 1, 1999.
* The Mets were one of three teams on Wednesday to win a game in which they trailed entering the 9th inning. Teams trailing entering the 9th inning entered Wednesday having won just 4% of the time this season.
* Did Keith Hernandez ever finish his story about the walk-off win against the Cardinals on September 12, 1985? It was rudely interrupted by a Jose Reyes home run. For my story on that moment, click on this link

True Metnandos know...That the Mets had 16 strikeouts in one other walk-off win, and Amazin'ly enough it came 39 years ago to the day- May 28, 1969- when they beat the Padres 1-0 in 11 innings on a Bud Harrelson walk-off hit. Jerry Koosman had 15 of the 16 strikeouts for the Mets that day.

Comments
1. The Koosman game marked his career high in strikeouts for a game. That it happened at the end of the second month of his second season in the big is incredible. For comparison sake, David Cone had his 19K game at the end of his fifth year as a Met. Dwight Gooden had two 16K games late in his rookie year and another in the fifth month of Year 2. And of course Tom Seaver's 19K game (4/22/70) came in the first month of his fourth season.
2. Tatis' hit was very reminiscent of the hit that beat Pat Clement as a walkoff vs. the Pirates on 4/21/86. The game was most memorable for Ray Knight's HR that tied the game vs. Cecilio Guante. Let's hope it carries the same ramifications.

This wasn't Endy's first career HR. first in a while, but he had one last year, and four on '06.
Good catch. I have made the fix.
