Valiant Valentin

The best notes on walk-off #340 that I could muster at 2 a.m....

* It's the 1st walk-off win for the Mets since June 3. It was the 10th walk-off win in the season, giving the Mets the most walk-off wins in MLB

* It's the 23rd 1-0 walk-off win in team history, and the 2nd this season. The only other years in which the Mets had at least 2 1-0 walk-off wins: 1965 (2) and 1969 (3)

* It's the 4th 1-0 win to last at least 10 innings and the 1st since April 12, 2001, when Rey Ordonez beat the Braves with a walk-off single

* It's the 36th walk-off win against the Cubs and the 1st with a 1-0 final score. It's the first against the Cubs since September 25, 2004, in another contest in which Mark Prior started for Chicago.

* Jose Valentin is the 3rd Mets Jose with a walk-off hit, joining Reyes (who also had one in a 1-0 game) and Vizcaino.

* Of the 10 pitchers to take walk-off losses against the Mets this season, Glendon Rusch is the 1st of those to be a former Met.

* Rusch is the 1st former Met to suffer a walk-off loss against the team since Jason Isringhausen on May 18, 2004 (coincidentally the date of MLB's last no-hitter)

* This is the 8th straight full month (not counting October) that the Mets have had at least one walk-off win.

* This is the 25th time that a Mets walk-off hero went 2-for-5 in the walk-off win and the 13th in which that persons walk-off RBI was the only RBI for them that game.

* It's the 3rd July 26th walk-off win, joining those in 1983 and 2002.

* Lastly...the longest an opposing pitcher has taken a no-hitter in an eventual Mets walk-off win is 8 innings, by Larry Dierker, on September 30, 1966. You can read more about that one here:

True Metlentins know...That the Mets have had 1-0 walk-off wins utilizing every innings combination from 9 through 17 innings long, with 1 exception. They've never had a 1-0 walk-off win that lasted exactly 16 innings.

Woot! It's great to finally get another walk-off, isn't it?

I have two slightly off-topic questions for you, O Great Fount of Walk-Off Knowledge:

1) Has anyone (Met or otherwise) ever hit into a walk-off double-play?

2) If the home team takes the lead in the bottom of the 5th or later inning, and the game is called before the inning is completed, does that count as a walk-off win?

Silly questions, I know, but I'm insanely curious!

Great questions...

1- The Mets have never won a game on a walk-off double play. They have, amazingly, lost a game on a walk-off DP. I might write about that one in the near future.

2- I have 1 game in my files like that. You can read about it here. That should answer the query.

The best Mets ejections I know

When you think of the Mets and famous ejections, I'm guessing you first think of the famous Bobby Valentine mustache game, when after Valentine got tossed, he returned to the dugout in disguise. You know it. You love it. I remember being amused when I asked Bobby V about it while we were working on Baseball Tonight, how he simply said "It worked. We won the game." (true) But the Bobby V mustache game of June 9, 1999 is one of many, many memorable Mets ejection stories. And now thanks to Retrosheet and the magic of Newspapers.com , we have a convenient means for being able to share them. Ever since Retrosheet's David Smith recently announced that the Retrosheet ejection database was posted online , I've been a kid in a candy store. I've organized the data and done some lookups of media coverage around the games that interested me post. Those newspaper accounts fill in a lot of blanks. Without further ado (and with more work to do), here are some of my findings

Walk-Offs in Movies, TV, and Other Places

Note: I'm leaving this post up through the end of the week, a) because I don't have time to pump out something new and b)because I was hoping to build a really good list of entertainment industry walk-offs...so if you're looking for something new, check back on Monday or so... Of course, if there's a major trade or move, I'll adjust and try to post something... In the meantime, click on the "Table of Contents" link as well. It has been updated. SPOILER ALERT: Read at your own risk Caught the ending of "A League of Their Own" on one of the movie channels the other day and it got me to thinking that it would be fun to compile a list of walk-offs from movies, television, and other forms of entertainment. Here's the start, and only the start, as I spent about 30 minutes or so thinking it over Help me fill in the blanks by filling out the comments section.
